Recommendation: “The Tent is an incredibly moving work of art. Installed as a dual screen work The Tent demonstrated how suited Kannan’s work is for a gallery context”
“We worked with Kannan on his first solo exhibition in a UK gallery in early 2019. Central to the exhibition was a major co-commission The Tent which was supported by the British Council and Arts Council England through The New North and South; a three-year programme of activity across eleven arts organisations from the North of England and South Asia. The Tent was also shown as part of the 5th edition of the Colombo Art Biennale in Sri Lanka, and at University of Brighton Gallery. The Tent is an incredibly moving work of art that brings home the real and lasting impact of war beyond the headlines and the immediate aftermath we see in the news. Kannan’s sensitive and durational approach produces works which get under the skin and reveal the complexity of lived experience, the quiet day to day moments that often speak more of loss than the mass gatherings for the international media. Installed as a dual screen work The Tent, showed both of these moments together and demonstrated how suited Kannan’s work is for a gallery context. Working with Kannan was an absolute delight, his work gives voice to important and often overlooked stories and deserves greater exposure both inside and outside of galleries.” Bryony Bond, Director, The Tetley, United Kingdom, 7 December 2021
